The countess of Sutherland assembled all of the young men of her tenants.  She selected the best.  They were given a ‘Dram” and a pinch of snuff.  That was the way the regiment of the 93^rd Sutherland Highlanders was enrolled into the army.  To refuse, of course, would mean that the family would be evicted.  The 93^rd was at this time the best regiment.  They had 2 companies of Grenadiers, which meant they had enough tall, strong men to fill these 2 companies. Where the rest of the infantry was lucky to have enough for even one company.
